Walk
ancient pathways, enjoying breathtaking views, gastronomic delights and excellent wines.
5 12 June / 16 -23 Oct
On the first part of this seven night guided walking tour you will visit Pitigliano, famous for its wine, Sorano and Sovana spending three nights in the spectacularly positioned town of Pitigliano, set on sheer tufa cliffs, the houses appear to be chiselled out of the rock and rise up over the green valleys and the river Lente. This ancient town was of great importance during the Etruscan period, and you will explore the very roads which they carved out of the tufo to connect the three towns. Good walking boots with ankle support and a good grip are necessary as some of these ancient roads can be slippery.
Accommodation in Pitigliano will be provided by the diocese in a building which was once home to the nuns. The simple, modern twin rooms are comfortable and have private bathrooms. There is also a small chapel in the building.
On the fourth day you will leave Pitigliano and drive a short distance to start your walk to the hot water spa resort of Saturnia where you will spend the afternoon in the hot water pool before continuing on to spend the next 4 nights of the tour on Monte Argentario, a beautiful peninsula jutting out into the Tuscan Arcipelago, with olive groves and vineyards, steep cliffs and sandy coves. You will stay in the port town of Santo Stefano with its harbour for yachts and lively fish markets. Your hotel is set on the sea and all rooms have sea views. It is a modern, comfortable hotel within walking distance of the harbour and town. From here you will explore the peninsula, the Nature Park of the Maremma, 15 km of woodland home to the famous long horned white cattle of this area which roam together with horses, deer and wild boar, accompanied by a wonderland of migratory birds and one of the most beautiful coastlines that Italy has to offer, as well as visiting the island of Giglio.
Tuscan cuisine is second to none and you will sample many of the specialities of the local cuisine: bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil, home made pasta accompanied with hare or wild boar sauce, porcini mushrooms and succulent roasts as well as fresh fish and seafood all washed down by excellent local wines.
